Institute of National Importance
An Institute of National Importance, in India is defined as one which serves as a pivotal player in developing highly skilled personnel within the specified region of the country/state. Institutes on the list are usually supported by the Government of India. The Department of Higher Education's list includes 33 institutions[1] which are listed below, together with other institutes were declared later.[2][3] The Institutes of Information Technology Bill 2010 seeks to add the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) to the list.[4]. As of June 2011[update] the bill was not approved yet.[5]
